Burial and Memorial Benefits

Benefits may include (but are not limited to) the following

• Headstones and Markers
  The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) furnishes upon request, at no charge to the applicant, a government headstone or marker for the grave of any deceased eligible veteran in any cemetery around the world. For all deaths occurring before September 11, 2001, the VA may provide a headstone or marker only for graves that are not marked with a private headstone. Upright headstones in granite and marble, and flat markers in granite, marble, and bronze are available. The style chosen must be consistent with existing monuments at the place of burial. Niche markers are also available to mark columbaria used for inurnment of cremated remains.
• Presidential Memorial Certificate
  The PMC is an engraved paper certificate, signed by the current President, to honor the memory of honorably discharged deceased veterans.
• Burial Flag
  The Veterans Benefits Administration provides a U.S. flag at no cost, to drape the casket or accompany the urn of a deceased veteran who served honorably in the U.S. armed forces. It is furnished to honor the memory of a veteran’s military service to his or her country.
• VA Life Insurance Program
  The VA insurance programs were developed to provide insurance benefits for veterans and service members who may not be able to get insurance from private companies because of the extra risks involved in military service, or a service connected disability. To Obtain Replacement DD214s and other Military Records

Military service records are the only proof of military service available. In some cases, records are destroyed and have to be replaced. In others, records were incorrect and need to be updated.
